Their Eyes Were Watching God
I really enjoyed reading "Their Eyes Were Watching God" and I also found it to send out an interesting message. I found that throughout the whole story Janie has set out on an adventure to find true love, but not only true love and happiness but also her own independence. When she was married to Logan, she experienced neither love or independence. Jody showed her love and happiness at one point in time but denied her her own independence. And finally with Tea Cake Janie experiences the love and happiness she has been searching for also becomes secure in her own independence. Although it seems funny that in the end she ends up shooting Tea Cake and ultimately ends up alone, she does not feel alone. Janie feels Tea Cake's presence around her because when she was with Tea Cake she truly feels happy and in love and even though Tea Cake is gone she still feels that and therefore, is content being alone, and although she is alone, Janie doesn't actually feel alone.

I agree Janie was out to find true love but before that can happen she had to find herself and what she wanted out of life. Then she would have been better off then running through men like stop signs. When she was married to the mayor he felt as if he owned her for two reason he was the mayor of the town and he was richer than the other people. Tea cake accepted her for who she was. she could be herself around tea cake and she liked that about him she different have to be this woman who she wasnt. If isnt love why does Janie feel's this way about tea cake. Why does he stay on her mind. Sometime we have to wait until the man comes to us. Janie waited and she was in love no matter what other had to say
I agree that Janie was in truly in love with Tea Cake. I don't really feel like he was the husband she needed though because there is a big difference in being controlling and in being protective and there was a point where Tea Cake turned into controlling. I am happy that Janie found herself through Tea Cake but I also think that maybe Hurston is pointing out that Janie didn't find herself until she met Tea Cake but maybe it isn't a man that is necessary when it comes to finding yourself.
